First Access

important

Because Matrix has build-in encryption and tries to share the secret key as simple as possible, it is important to set up everything in a stable environment. I recommend to use a Desktop and a browser which does not delete session data!

After setting up an Academic Cloud account , start by visiting chat.academiccloud.de . You should see this screen:

Clicking on the blue button, your home server should already be filled in. And you can click on the green button.

On the next page,

you can use the

to login. Matrix will ask for permission to import your Matrix-ID, your Email address and a display name.

After that, it will also ask to be allowed to access your data:

After that, the browser version of Element will be started, and it will ask to be allowed to use the persistent web storage. It is important to allow this!

Now you will probably be asked to set up your security keys.

The GWDG recommends letting Element generate a security key and to save it at a secure place.

This is important because if you now use an additional device (like a smartphone or the desktop client), you will be asked to verify the new session. You can either do this by accepting the new session (i.e. smartphone) from an older session (i.e. browser) or by using the generated key.

When using a different client than browser version mentioned before, you need to specify chat.academiccloud.de as your home server.
